Home / Cleaning & Care
A few simple habits keep cabinet finishes looking new for years. Here is how to clean your cabinets safely and what to avoid.
Wipe doors, drawer fronts, and frames with a soft, damp cloth and a small amount of mild dish soap diluted in warm water. Work with the grain on wood finishes, then go back over the surface with a clean cloth dampened with plain water to lift any soap residue.
Always dry the surface immediately with a soft, dry cloth. Standing water is the most common cause of finish damage, especially along door edges and around the sink base.
Many household cleaners are too aggressive for cabinet finishes. Avoid:
Wood and finished panels move with moisture. Keep the room within a normal indoor humidity range, run exhaust fans when cooking or bathing, and wipe up splashes and condensation as soon as you notice them. Pay particular attention to the cabinets around the sink and dishwasher, where water exposure is constant.
Avoid directing heat or steam at cabinet surfaces. Do not run a kettle, rice cooker, or coffee maker directly beneath a wall cabinet, and pull self-venting appliances forward so the steam clears the door above. When the dishwasher finishes, let the steam dissipate before leaving the door propped against the adjacent cabinet face.
Small nicks and scratches are normal in a working kitchen. A finish-matched touch-up kit — typically a fill stick and a marker — handles most of them in minutes. Test the color on an inside edge first, then fill, wipe, and buff with a soft cloth. For deeper damage, contact us about replacement doors or panels for your line.
